How Ann Tuennerman brought the world of spirits back to New Orleans. We caught up with Ann to talk about Tales, branding, and believe it or not, the one cocktail she does NOT like!
The Story of Tales of the Cocktail
There is some debate whether New Orleans actually invented the cocktail (New Orleans didn’t invent the cocktail), but there’s no question about who invented and perfected the boozy cocktail conference – shaking together business and pleasure in a stout, week-long festival that draws crowds from every corner of the earth.
Tales of the Cocktail, founded in 2002, is the world’s largest gathering of distillers, bartenders, and sprit enthusiasts (and we don’t mean deeply religious, even though the two do occasionally overlap.)
While the festival didn’t make New Orleans a cocktail capitol – that distinction was earned long, long ago – it did revive the heat-stroked month of July for the city. Tales turned a normally quiet month in The Big Easy’s tourism schedule into the bustling center of the cocktail cosmos.
None of this would have been possible without the work of Tales’ founder, Ann Tuennerman. Although young for a grand dame, Mrs. Tuennerman’s vision and vigor have made her just that. Her strategic guidance built Tales into a brand that would immediately invalidate our Top New Orleans Brands list if omitted.
Tales of the Cocktail is a brilliant blend of history lesson, marketing extravaganza, and libation wonderland for the habitually thirsty. And, unsurprisingly given her knowledge of craft mixology, she combines all of these brand voices perfectly for a dynamic, expertly balanced brand.
